Christian meets Evangelist

As CHRISTIAN stands, disconslate in wo,

EVANGELIST directs him where to go.

See yonder Wicket-Gate; of foes Beware;

The shining light beyond will guide you there.

He runs with speed, for "Life, Eternal Life!"

Nor heeding call of children or of wife.

Two neighbours come, by force to make him stay:

One soon returns - and one attempts the way.

They talk of heaven, its glory, and its praise;

But while they talk, they heed not their own ways:

They stumble both into a deep profound,

Its nature miry, and its name DESPOND.

They plunge, they toss, they tremble, and they fear

They bitterly complain: no help is near.

One stumbles out, bemired and sprinkled o'er;

One, conscious of his burden, sinks the more.

And as he sinks, he cries the louder still

For help; and one that helps obeys his will.

"Give me thy hand" - step here upon this shore;

Thy faith hath saved thee; go and sin no more.

O saving Grace, that lifts us from our fall,

Renews our strength, and is our all in all!

Forsake us not; make doubts and dangers cease;

Conduct our Pilgrimage, and bring us Home in Peace!
