The Pilgrim goes again astray;
And WORLDLY-WISDOM leads the way:
Ah! Whither are they gone?
To yonder dark and lowering Hill,
That thunders the Almighty will-
He wanders all alone.
Its lightnings flash; its thunders roll;
And with alarm they fill the soul,
And tell that wrath is nigh.
The rock impends, the mountain burns,
And in his anguish now he turns,
To perish and to die.
Beneath the Law of God he stood,
The Law, that's holy, just, and good,
The Father's stern decree.
And whoso doth not well comply,
That soul that sinneth, it shall die,
To all Eternity.
Behold, EVANGELIST is near;
And lo, he asks - What dost thou here,
Far from the narrow way?
Hast thou forgotten my commands,
Hast thou despised the Law's demands,
That thou art thus astray?
The Pilgrim asks - What thinkest thou -
Is there no hope, no safety now
For such an one as I?
EVANGEL smiles, bids sorrows cease;
I give to thee the Kiss of Peace
God speed thee on thy way!
